When inspecting your home or business to see if it needs siding repairs, we take many factors into account, such as:

The Kind of Siding Damage You Have

Siding damage can take on many different appearances and forms. For instance, you may notice cracks or warping in certain areas, while other sections may be suffering from rot or fading. Water damage can also wreak havoc on your siding, leading to further complications. No two types of siding damage are ever the same, which is why we approach every siding repair job with a fresh pair of eyes and an open mind. That way, we can better ensure that your siding is restored to its former glory..

The Causes of Your Siding Damage

Siding damage can be caused by various factors, and it's important to understand the root cause to address the issue effectively. One of the most common causes is severe weather conditions, such as hail, wind, or heavy rain, which can cause dents, cracks, or even completely dislodge the siding. Poor installation is another common cause, as it can lead to gaps or improper attachment that can leave the siding vulnerable to damage from weather or pests. Aging is also a factor, as older siding may become brittle or weakened over time, making it more susceptible to damage. Pests can also cause siding damage by burrowing into wood and compromising its structural integrity. By recognizing the root cause of your siding damage, we can address any issues promptly and take preventative steps to avoid future siding repairs.

Cracks, gaps, or holes in your cladding can be more than just an aesthetic issue. They can allow water to seep into the interior of your wall, where it can cause moisture-related problems such as rot, mold, and mildew. Repairing water damage can be frustrating and expensive - so much so that new siding installation in St. Stephen, SC is often preferred. Such damage not only jeopardizes the structural soundness of your house but can also pose a threat to your health. Gaps in your cladding also provide entry points for pests like rats and termites, which can cause similar problems for your house and family's wellbeing.

It's important to inspect your cladding from different angles because sometimes there may not be any visible holes or gaps, but the cladding can still warp. This means that certain sections may bulge outward or cup inward, which is a warning sign that something is not right underneath. Usually, this indicates moisture damage and needs to be addressed immediately.

Have you noticed an increase in your heating and cooling costs even though you haven't changed your usage? If you feel cool drafts near walls, windows, light switches, or electrical sockets, it's possible that damage to your siding is causing a spike in energy consumption. Consulting with a professional window installation company can help you determine the exact problem. If it's related to your cladding, replacing it with energy-efficient, insulated vinyl siding can save you a considerable amount of money in the long run.

It's important to keep an eye out for any fungus, mold, or other types of growth that may appear on your siding, especially near the seams. These substances tend to grow in areas where there is moisture, which could indicate that water is seeping into your siding. Although not all cases of fungus are alarming, it's definitely worth investigating further.

If your business or house has wooden siding, it's essential to keep a close eye on it for any signs of wood rot. Wood rot is a type of decay caused by fungi that eats away at the wood and requires a high moisture content to thrive. Since wooden siding is exposed to the elements, it's especially vulnerable to rotting. Regular inspections can help prevent serious issues, but new siding installation is almost preferred when your wood has been rotting for an extended time.

ST. STEPHEN, S.C. (WCSC) - Berkeley County officials are one step closer to cleaning up St. Stephen areas, including an old high school.

The Town of St. Stephen will have revitalized areas in the upcoming years thanks to grant funding from the Environmental Protection Agency. Berkeley County officials applied for the first Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield grant back in 2022 as part of phase one of its initiative.

County officials accepted $500,000 in funding to assess many areas around town with environmental experts. The initiative focuses on the old St. Stephen High School that closed back in 1996, along with an old lumber mill that closed around 1970 on an 85-acre land area.

The assessment of the old high school’s property found mercury in the gym floor, lead paint, asbestos and structural integrity concerns.

Berkeley County officials say community members are supportive of cleaning up the old high school property as it holds cultural value for many alumni.

The Workforce Development Manager for Berkeley County, Corey McClary, says findings will be shared with the community before heading into phase two of the cleanup. McClary says the initiative is driven by the community’s wishes for the area.

“The old St. Stephen High School was actually the old Russellville High School,” McClary says. “And a lot of the community residents, they all attended that school so it has a significant cultural as well as local importance to them and they were very adamant on doing whatever they could to just save that.”

Official’s next steps are to submit an application for another Brownfield grant as well as the Clean-up grant by the EPA in November. This funding goes towards cleaning up the hazardous materials found on the property.

“We have been working hard to make sure we do everything we can to try to salvage what remains of that school,” McClary says. “and to see something happen in the future that can help benefit not only the old students that called that school home but also the current community.”

Community members are encouraged to get involved with the initiative through community meetings. The next meeting takes place at St. Stephen Elementary School at 1053 Russellville Road at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Officials will share assessments and receive public comments on the grant’s draft application. Community members can also send their comments to corey.mcclary@berkeleycountysc.gov or contact 843-719-4096.

The County plans to submit an EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant Application in November 2024 to apply for funding to remove hazardous materials and/or petroleum products identified at the property. Prior to submitting the grant, the County is encouraging community members to review and comment on the draft application which includes draft Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA) on Tuesday October 29, 2024. [BH1] Additionally, an electronic copy of the draft cleanup application and the ABCA will be available online at https://berkeleymeansbusiness.com/brownfield/ beginning October 15, 2024, for public review and comment.

This initiative is part of a larger Brownfield Grant Program the County commenced in 2022 when County Council approved a $500,000 EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant to fund a large-scale revitalization initiative in the St. Stephen area. Part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Brownfield Community Wide Assessment Grant Program, the EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant is helping fund environmental assessments on certain properties throughout St. Stephen—including the former St. Stephen High School property.

“We are eager to see our revitalization efforts in the St. Stephen area continue to advance and know this EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant will be another critical step in our vision to grow vital opportunities and improve quality of life for all who live and work there. Through solid and supportive partnerships with Terracon, the Asiko Group, and Town of St. Stephen, we have a team of skilled and like-minded individuals passionately working toward the preservation of St. Stephen’s unique landmarks and community members’ enduring success.” -Corey McClary, Berkeley County Workforce Development Manager

The EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant identified the former high school as a potential site for redevelopment in the area with a goal to provide more job opportunities and other quality of life resources for the community.

Over the last two years, community engagement has been a critical part of the EPA Brownfield Assessment Grant, including the establishment of the Brownfield Steering Committee, an 11-member team of local residents. This group directs the County in the assessment of properties and establishing goals and outcomes of the grant process.

A community meeting on the new EPA Brownfields Cleanup Grant is set for Tuesday, October 29 at 6 p.m. at St. Stephen Elementary School, located at 1053 Russellville Road, St. Stephen. The meeting will be a time for the public to review and comment on the draft grant application and ABCA in person and provide public comment.

Should you need assistance accessing the grant or if you are unable to attend the public meeting or wish to submit public comments, please contact Corey McClary, Workforce Development Manager for Berkeley County Economic Development, at vog.csytnuocyelekreb@yralccm.yeroc or 843-719-4096.
